Tips for the neuromarketing phd challenge
The content of a winning pitch is only half the battle. Your pitch delivery is just as important as the information. Nobody wants to listen to a boring, low-key sales pitch. Instead, follow these guidelines to craft an interesting, punchy elevator pitch. So:

  • Keep it short – You only have 1,5 minute of video. Don’t waste your time with a pitch that drags on.
  • Be concise and keep it simple – Getting your point across without boring your listener is an art that takes practice. Whittle your pitch down to the bare essentials without cutting out important details. If a technical detail or statistic is essential to your pitch then include it, but don’t include information that’s more appropriate for a thesis. Think first date, not marriage proposal.
  • Use plain English – You might know your topic of interest inside and out, but that doesn’t mean your listener does. Strip out  jargon wherever possible. Even if your idea is inherently technical, do what you can to strip out the tech talk. If you can explain your idea to an 8 year old you’re on the right track.
  • Have a hook – Open your pitch with a strong hook that gets the listeners attention. It could be a compelling fact about your market, a marketing tagline or a revenue prediction. Stay away from anything cheesy, but strive to be memorable.
  • Grab the listener’s attention – You may not consider yourself a showman, but your listeners will appreciate authenticity and enthusiasm in your presentation. Let your personality and attitude show through and express your passion for your business. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not, but do put your best foot forward.
  • Show the added value for business – The audience want to know why your research will be valueble to them. Do you have a strong vision on that? Clearly state why your research is most important to the neuromarketing industry and regular marketing business.
  • Practice – Nobody is a born natural when it comes to elevator pitches. Just like a sales presentation or a dance routine, you MUST practice to have success with your elevator pitch. Practice delivering your pitch with slight variations and you’ll be ready to present in any almost situation. After all, you never know when you’ll bump into your angel investor. Spend time practicing in front of a video camera. When you’re comfortable with camera practice your pitch in front of a friend, family member, or colleague. It might cost you a coffee or a movie ticket, but it’s well worth the investment.

If you follow the guidelines above you’ll be well on your way to an effective elevator pitch. Now, get out there and pitch!
