Memory is like a cookbook of recipes
“Memory is not a file of photographs. It is not a warehouse where we store memories. Nor is it, as St Augustine said, a prestigious hall. There is nothing static about it. As Damasio says, what is store in the memory are ‘dispositions’, ‘dynamic outlines’ to rebuild experiences. It is more like a cookbook of recipes than frozen dinners stored in the freezer. Remembering is reconstructing a memory.” — Jose Antonio Marina
Pepe Martinez differentiates between the following types of memory in the brain:
- The five senses (for example, visual or olfactory memory)
- Procedural memory (automatical – cerebellum and other subcortical areas) versus declarative memory (semnatic memory knowledge and autobiographical memory)
- Long-term memory (LTM) versus short-term memory (STM)
- Rational memory (thoughts, ideas, contents) versus emotional memory (positive, neutral or negative valence)
- Conscious memory versus unconscious memory
